Luxury Vinyl Flooring is popular for homeowners who want a stylish yet durable flooring option.

If you have luxury vinyl, then you must be familiar with the issue of buckling with vinyl plank.

What causes buckling? Let’s delve deeper.

3 Reasons for Buckling of LVP Flooring

Buckling may occur due to various reasons. Understanding these will help you to take preventive measures.

1. Moisture

Consistent water seeping under the floor can make the adhesive weakened. Hence it can cause buckling due to moisture. Mostly, it happens in bathrooms or kitchens because of high water usage around these areas.

2. Heat & Sunlight

Expansion and contraction are a common phenomenon in LVP flooring. Due to this, buckling can take place. Once the material gets warmer and expands slightly, it causes the floor to buckle. On the other hand, the material can contract in colder weather by leaving gaps between two tiles.

The extreme heat of sunlight releases the glue bond, resulting in the tiles shifting. Flooring with a fiberglass inner layer is more susceptible to buckling. Also, rooms with sliding glass doors and large windows that receive direct sunlight are prone to buckling.

3. Dragging Heavy Objects

If continuous heavy furniture dragging takes place across the floor surface, the chances that it will start buckling are higher. The weight of those furniture can wreak havoc on the floor.

How Can You Prevent LVP Floor Buckling?

By taking some preventive measures, you can stop the floor from buckling. Here are a few ways to do so:

1. Use Top-quality Adhesive

Ensure you’re using proper adhesive during the glue-down installation process. It will lose less compared to inexpensive ones. Hence, the floors will buckle less. However, each brand of adhesive has its designated work time, which forms a secure bond. Follow all the instructions during the installation process to get the best results.

2. Proper Acclimation

Ensure the vinyl planks are properly acclimated before installation. It allows the plank to sit in the room according to the humidity and temperature. Hence, it can prevent buckling.

3. Protect from Direct Sunlight

Extreme heat can damage the LVP flooring. Prevent the same by protecting sections of vinyl plank flooring. You can apply UV film or glass tint to limit the light and heat transfer through the window. Also, you can hang thermal curtains to prevent the damage.

4. Ensure the Subfloor is Level

Ensure the luxury vinyl flooring subfloor is free from any bumps and debris. You can use a self-leveling compound to even out the areas if needed. This will allow the LVP flooring to lay flat and stay in place.
